HEAP helps low-income households meet the cost of heating their homes. The benefit can pay for fuel, your utility source, and heating equipment replacement and repairs. The benefit is paid directly to the heating vendor or utility company.

Applications for the 2023-2024 HEAP Regular Benefit opened November 1, 2023.You may be able to get HEAP even if your heat is included in your rent.Other benefits are scheduled to open as follows:Heating Equipment Repair and Replacement (HERR) Benefit— October 2, 2023: helps you repair or replace your furnace, boiler and other direct heating equipment if you’re a homeowner.Clean and Tune Benefit — October 2, 2023: helps you get energy efficiency services like heating equipment cleaning.Emergency Benefit — January 2, 2024: helps with heating fuel shortages and utility shutoff emergencies.Cooling Assistance Component is currently closed and is scheduled to open on April 15, 2024 to August 31, 2024. Cooling Assistance benefits are provided on a first come, first served basis to eligible applicants.

Regular HEAP eligibility and benefits are based on:

To apply for HEAP, at least one household member will need a valid Social Security Number (SSN).You will also need to give documents that show:
the identity of the people who live with you: such as a birth certificate, driver's license, US passport, or naturalization certificatewhere you live: such as current rent receipt or leaseyour income: such as pay stubsyour fuel or utility expenses: such as a recent bill or statement from your landlord stating that utilities are included in your rent.disability status: if someone in your household has a disability.
